Tibetans hold vigil in support of Panchen Lama

The Tibetan community of Utah gathered downtown Wednesday night to demand the release of Tibet's second-highest religious leader.

The candlelight vigil was held on the 23rd birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. As the second-highest religious leader of Tibet after the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama has played a significant role in Tibetan history.

Protesters say the Chinese government has held the Panchen Lama in captivity for 17 years, since he was only 6 years old. They say the kidnapping and captivity is a way for China to maintain control over the Tibetan people.

Official reports from the Chinese government claim he is safe and hidden for his safety, but he has not been seen since his abduction.

Such are the sensations waiting to be experienced during Evening in Paris, the next World Music and Dance event produced by The Grand Theatre. Local talent is being brought together for a night of entertainment on the big stage.

The Downtown Library in Salt Lake City hosted the 10th annual Puppet Festival this weekend.

The Maritime Marionettes of Nova Scotia were among the numerous performers on the agenda for the festival that runs through Sunday.

"Puppets make so many things come to life in a very unique and unusual way. It's really a very ancient art form going back thousands of years to shadow puppets on cave walls," said Mary Anne Heider, organizer of the festival.

The festival will continue Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. All ages are welcome.
